About Luxury Trains In India
India’s luxury trains are probably a precious gift for all those who have harboured dreams of living in the bygone eras. A beautiful gleaming carriage straight out of ancient India, discover a larger than life world inside; the opulent interiors with antique furniture, well carpeted area, a brightly lit ceiling and a turbaned guard welcoming you.
From the inception of Palace on Wheels in 1982, the well heeled traveller got a wonderful new haunt in India. Over the years, the response to this novel way of travelling was probably so encouraging that the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation came up with a new train, the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels early this year. To give tourists a royal taste of Maharashtra, the State’s tourism department came up with Deccan Odyssey while the Karnataka State Tourism conceived the Golden Chariot. Each of them, a masterpiece in their own way, has carved their own identity and has gifted something special to India. Now, even leading travel companies, Cox and Kings and the Travel Corporation India, have launched the two new luxury trains on the tracks.
Palace on Wheels
An intiative of the Rajasthan Tourism Department Corporation, this train familiarised Indians with the concept of luxury trains. Over the years, the train has gone through a makeover and with 14 air conditioned saloons, two dining cars, a bar and a lounge, the train is today at par with some of the best luxury trains around the world. The train chugs out of the Delhi every Wednesday. A trip on this train makes tourists travel across Jaipur, Udaipur, Ranthanbore, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Bharatpur and even Agra. Even as the tourists go through these locations, aboard the train, they are treated to an array of luxuries as the khidmatgars (personal assistants) take personal care of each and every demand of the guests. It surely is a royal way to visit the royal land of India.
Royal Rajasthan on Wheels
The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels went on its maiden journey in January this year. While the itinerary remains same as that of the Palace on Wheels, the experience on this train promises to be much more luxurious. The suites have been named after the two precious stones, emerald and diamond. The 13 deluxe and one super deluxe saloon in this offer a spacious living with a complete feel of royalty. The exquisite silk and velvet bedspreads and draperies take one to the bygone era. The finely carved wooden furniture in the super-deluxe suite adds to the experience. The bed in the cabin is large and comfortable with colour- coordinated draperies. The saloons have been created in three different themes in hues of exquisite jewels, ruby, sapphire and pearl. Gastronomy lovers are treated to an array of delicacies abroad in the restaurants Sheesh Mahal and Swarn Mahal. The train also houses a spa and provides passengers with souvenirs to gift their loved ones.
The Golden Chariot
The Golden Chariot, named after the famous Stone Chariot in Hampi,a world heritage site, travels through timeless historical heritage sites, resplendent palaces, wildlife and golden beaches of Karnataka. The luxury cabins with interiors steeped in history have been named after the dynasties that ruled Karnataka – Kadamba, Hoysala, Rastrakota, Ganga, Chalukya, Bhahamani, Adhilshahi, Sangama, Shathavashna, Yudukula and Vijayanagar. The train also houses a lounge bar, two restaurants, a fitness centre and spa.
The colorful journey begins every Monday from Bengaluru and traverses through The Nagarhole National Park (Kabini), Mysore, visiting Srirangapatna, Mysore Palace, and continuing to the historical sites of Shravanabelagola, Belur and Halebidu - the
11th century cradle of Hoysala architecture, the world heritage site Hampi thereafter entering into heritage sites of Badami and Pattadakal. A visit to the golden beaches of Goa completes the exciting journey before the train enters back Bengaluru.
